INTASC 2 and Developmental Standards Reflection
INTASC principle 2 involves being aware of how students learn and knowing what strategies are appropriate for teaching them based on that knowledge. Teachers must be able to understand student development, and then alter their lesson plans if necessary to accommodate all students. This principle is important because it is imperative that teachers understand their students before they begin teaching them. Before teachers can receive their license, they are required to show that they understand the developmental standards. The first standard entails a deep understanding of student development and student differences, so that teachers can create lesson plans, which encourage learning for all. To fulfill the second standard teachers must be knowledgeable about learning processes and strategies that promote student learning. Environment is a key factor with the fifth developmental standard because teachers must demonstrate that they can create positive learning environments for their students. These standards give teachers something to follow when they first begin to teach.
Because I have only taken two child psychology classes, I still have plenty to learn when it comes to student development. I do not know enough about the way children learn to be able to teach them proficiently, so I need to increase my knowledge on children before I can teach them. Another weakness that I have is that I’ve never really worked with students of diverse backgrounds, so I’m not sure how to teach these students. In high school I taught elementary students for two hours everyday, and I tutored high school students, so I have some experience with teaching. However, I still do not know many effective teaching strategies, which is why I need more practice.
My first goal for the future is to increase my knowledge about student development through the classes that I will take in my major as well as through volunteering. I plan to volunteer at the Boys and Girls Club at some point, so that I can learn more about child development. Volunteering at the Boys and Girls Club will give me first hand experience working with children. Another goal I have is to gain experience teaching students from diverse backgrounds. To do this I hope to tutor students in Muncie next semester, so that I can compare these students to the ones that I have tutored in my hometown. Another thing I would like to accomplish is to teach students in other countries. This will give me ideas for teaching different types of students in the future. Finally, I’d like to be able to create effective lesson plans that will be interesting for students as well as help them fully grasp the material that I teach. I have only created two lesson plans so far, so I still need a considerable amount of practice.
